The Big Picture for Buying Online Tickets

When it comes to traveling internationally, especially if this is your first time, and you are travel solo, it's important to give yourself enough time to do some research. The price of the airline ticket will be the biggest investment for your dream trip, so please take the time to learn and practice searching for the best ticket option for you. However, remember that the price shouldn't be the sole factor in making your decision. Instead of simply going for the cheapest deal, consider them as references. Please keep reading, as I will explain below.

If you don't live in a city with an international airport that offers direct flights to Rome, there is a possibility that your second flight may be outside of the U.S. and then onwards to Rome. This can make the experience a bit tricky, along with the 5-7 hour time zone change. But don't worry, I'm here to help. I'm sharing from my personal experience and I've encountered enough trouble to learn my lesson, so I'm here to help you in avoiding them. So before rushing into buying the ticket, keep reading and understand why. The decision you make now could save you from unnecessary stress and potential expenses for your dream trip.

Before purchasing your ticket, consider your travel plans. Read the four reminder tips and use your answers to find the ticket that best matches your ideal travel day.

  • Ask yourself, if your departure time is 9:00 a.m., can you be there at least 7:00 a.m.? or even earlier? When you book your ticket, you are booking your future experience.

Here is why we need time. One the day you travel to Rome, make sure to arrive at the airport at least 2.5 hours before your departure time. Arriving early will help you avoid long waits in case of long lines. Once you have your boarding pass, you will need to go through airport security check, which can also have a longer line as all passengers must pass through this checkpoint to reach their boarding gate. The time it takes for the security check can vary, ranging from 15 minutes if you're lucky to 1.5 hours in my case in Dubai. After completing the security check, you also need time to find your gate for boarding your flight. If you are traveling from a larger airport like Los Angeles, which handles both national and international flights, it may take up to 45 minutes or more to find your gate due to the airport's size. Be prepared as the airport can be like a small town.

  • When you book your ticket, think about your landing time. Ideally, try not to arrive later than 9:30 pm, especially if you are solo female traveler for many good reasons. If you have someone to pick you up, then au does not need to worry.

This is because after your flight landed, you will need to go through immigration point, and then go to baggage claims, and so by the time you have everything, it could be 10:30 pm or even later.

If you are travelling to Rome, take our train from Fiumicino Airport to Rome city (approximately 30 minutes), and plus find your way to the hotel or Airbnb from train station is another one hour or so, so my suggestion is to arrive in the day time, or even in the morning, then you will give yourself a day to refresh yourself, and enjoy the city.

  • When deciding which ticket to buy, in addition to your departure and landing time, you need to pay close attention to the transfer time. You will need to click to see the details, and if possible, allow yourself at least 2 hours to transfer to your next flight. Knowing you have enough time to navigate the situation will bring you peace of mind.

Let's say your first flight takes you from St. Louis to Berlin, and your second flight is from Berlin to Rome. Your first flight will land in a major international airport, which is typically large. Ideally, if your flight lands on time and everyone disembarks smoothly, that's perfect. However, this isn't always the case, and you can't do anything about it. This is why giving yourself enough time can save you from stress.

After leaving your first airplane, you need to find your second gate for the next flight. Sometimes, the second boarding gate can be far away. I hope this isn't the case for you, but it's good to know when deciding which ticket to purchase. Being aware of this can impact your travel experience.

Also, allow yourself at least 2 hours for restroom breaks, stretching, grounding yourself, or making phone calls. Avoid booking a connecting flight with less than 1.5 hours of layover time for many practical reasons.

  • Avoid booking your departure time too early in the morning.

For example, if your flight takes off at 7:00 a.m., this means you will need to be at the airport at least 2 hours ahead for the reasons we addressed before: check-in, getting your boarding pass, going through security, and so on.

And if no one can take you to the airport, considering your transportation options to the airport in the early morning is also risky. The local train schedule may not align perfectly with your schedule, or it could be affected by service disruptions. If possible, try to book a return time that allows for more flexibility, as being in a foreign country may require additional time to navigate and figure things out.

Google flights is the most accurate way to search. It’s the same interface and filter system as the OTA (online travel agencies). You use it to find the lowest fare and best schedule, then book the ticket directly with the airline, refundable. You use it to identify the best schedule and fare and then you STOP and go to the airline’s website and book those exact flights refundable. Then, when/if something happens, the airline agents will help you get re-accommodated.

Online travel agencies (OTA)- Read the cancellation policies carefully. Usually, tickets are non-refundable, but you will have credit for your next flight. In the event of flight delays or cancellations, airline agents are unable to assist you. You will need to speak to the OTA assistant.

While Skyscanner shows flight options all across the world, where we found it really shined was for European flight searches. Skyscanner also gives you more toggles to customize your flight, including the ability to search for flights with lower carbon dioxide emissions or specific COVID-19 protocols.

Online travel agencies (OTA)- Best international flight search engine. Momondo is a different kind of flight search engine. In addition to comparing flight prices listed by the airlines themselves, it also compares prices on other flight search engines. Then, when you're ready to book, Momondo will link you to one of these other search engines to complete your itinerary.

1, Here, I will use Skyscanner as an example to illustrate my point. For instance, if I enter the departure date as 5/28 and the return date as 6/27, the website will display the best travel deals, which are highlighted in green, and so on. Keep in mind that the prices may vary depending on the day you are searching, and the date you fly, so feel free to try different dates to find the best options that meet your own plans. (Tips, don’t wait for too long to book your flight, you may ended up pay too much, or less ideal flight for you to choose)

2, After entering my travel dates (5/28-6/27) from St.Louis to Rome, the search site provided me with three results (see top row): the best deal for $1,558.00 with a travel time of 13 hours, the cheapest option for $1,279.00 but with a travel time of 29 hours or more, and the fastest option for $1,740 with a travel time of approximately 12 hours.

3, I found the best deal for $1,558 with a travel time of 13 hours. However, you need to click and view the details to see the departure time and the connecting time (1.10 hours). Although you will be in Detroit for your 2nd flight to Rome, based on my experience, this connection is still too tight. If possible, I recommend looking for other options that provide at least 2 hours of transfer time to give you peace of mind.

On the day of my return on 6/27, the departure time is 10:30 a.m which is good, and my flight will be a direct flight from Rome to Atlanta, and I will have 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach my 2nd flight. This is should be give me good amount of time, as it allows me for customs to re-enter the United States (could be another long line), and then take my 2nd flight from Atlanta to St.Louis.
