3. Creating a Practice Space

Creating a Practice Space

Creating a sacred space is so essential to establishing a consistent practice that it is worth a note here. Reserving a space for practice and making it special in some way that distinguishes it from the rest of your everyday life is a concrete way of reinforcing to yourself and others around you the importance and meaning of your practice.

Whether you have to luxury of an extra room in your home or only a small corner in your bedroom or living room, make sure that the space you have selected is clean and free of dust and personal items around you. A space size about 3-4 yoga mats is perfect for you to stretch out fully. Organize your yoga equipment neatly in this space so you do not have to interrupt your practice to find things. Ideally the space will have a hardwood floor or other firm surface and enough clear wall space so you can stand with your back to the wall and with your arms outstretched.

Now the most important part: Make this space personal to you: A small table, stool or shelf, or a clear space on the wall can act as a central focus. Here are some possibilities:

  • Keep a small plant, and tend to it before you practice.

  • Lean the space, keep the air flow, or to allow the mind to shift to present moment.

  • Play the music that help you shift your mood for Meditation or yoga session :

  • Light a candle, incense, or essential oil that enhance your concentration.

  • Place a picture of someone how has inspired you , or important to you, give them a place in your practice space, or a personal object, letter that is important to you, their presence here may help you during time of difficulty.

Don’t be carried away with too many objects, for you will want this space to be uncluttered. Removing stacks of book and household paraphernalia will prevent you from being distracted by everyday concern. Each time you practice in this special place it grows the power in you. After a while the space itself may draw you there to do your practice, providing essential and necessary solace in the midst of life’s challenges and pressures.

Preparing for Your Practice

Before you begin your yoga practice take a refreshing shower or bath and change into loose-fitting clothes. It’s a good idea to practice on an empty stomach, remove any restrictive clothing like belt. or accessories like necklace, glasses or smartwatch. Close the door to your practice room, and make sure the room temperature is comfortable and the floor well is cleaned, and well-padded if you are lying down.

If you don’t live alone, let the rest of your household know you don’t want to be disturbed for a while. Take the time to prepare yourself and your surroundings so you’ll get the most out of each session.
